The Legend of Vrinda and Jalandhar
This one's a bit more layered than most festival origin stories. Vrinda was a deeply devoted wife of the demon king Jalandhar, and her chastity was the actual source of his invincibility — no one could defeat him while she remained faithful. To break this, Vishnu took Jalandhar's form and tricked Vrinda, which allowed the gods to finally kill Jalandhar. When Vrinda discovered the deception, she cursed Vishnu to turn to stone — which is said to be the origin of the Shaligram stone, one of Vishnu's worshipped forms. She then ended her own life, and from her ashes grew the Tulsi plant. To make amends, Vishnu married Tulsi in her plant form — and that marriage is what's re-enacted every year on this day.
It's worth including this story in full rather than the sanitised one-line version most sites give, because the "why" behind Tulsi Vivah is genuinely more interesting than the ritual itself.
Puja Vidhi
- The Tulsi plant is decorated like a bride — a small cloth or dupatta is wrapped around the pot, bangles placed nearby, and a nose ring sometimes added.
- A small Shaligram idol (or a picture/idol of Vishnu) represents the groom, placed beside the plant.
- A mandap, often made from sugarcane stalks, is built around both.
- The couple is "married" with a formal Kanyadaan-style ritual — sindoor is applied to the Tulsi, and wedding mantras are recited.
- Wedding songs are sung, and sweets distributed, exactly as they would be for a real wedding.
- The ceremony closes with aarti to both Tulsi and Vishnu.
Why Tulsi Specifically
Tulsi holds an unusually central place in Vaishnav households — she's considered a form of Lakshmi herself in some traditions, and most Vishnu temples won't offer prasad without a Tulsi leaf included. Marrying her to Vishnu each year reinforces that bond and is also, practically speaking, treated as the "template" wedding that blesses every other wedding happening that season.
