Amavasya Tarpan

Amavasya Tarpan Online – Honor Your Lineage & Seek Ancestral Blessings

In Vedic tradition, our ancestors (Pitrus) reside in Pitri-Loka and depend on the offerings of their living descendants for sustenance and peace. Tarpan is the sacred act of "satiating" or "satisfying" these departed souls by offering water mixed with Black Sesame Seeds (Til). While Tarpan can be done daily, performing it on Amavasya (New Moon Day) is considered exceptionally powerful. It is believed that on this day, the gates between the worlds are thin, and the Pitrus visit their descendants to receive these offerings. Failing to honor them can lead to Pitru Dosha, while their satisfaction brings immense peace, prosperity, and the healthy continuation of the family line.

At Prayfullit, we provide expert Tirth-Purohits who guide you through the precise Vedic steps of Tarpan. Whether you are at home or at a sacred riverbank, our Pandits ensure your ancestors receive the nourishment they need to bless your life.

The Significance of Amavasya Tarpan:

  • Feeding the Departed: Just as we need food, ancestors require the energy of water and black sesame to sustain their journey in the higher realms.
  • Removal of Obstacles: Many life hurdles—such as career stagnation, family discord, or health issues—are often linked to unsatisfied ancestral spirits. Tarpan clears these blocks.
  • Lineage Protection: Satisfied ancestors act as a spiritual shield, protecting the family from accidents, "Evil Eye," and misfortune.
  • Emotional Fulfillment: It provides a moment of deep gratitude, connecting you to your roots and the generations that made your existence possible.

When to Perform Amavasya Tarpan?

  • Every Monthly Amavasya: Each New Moon is a dedicated time for ancestral rites.
  • Pitru Paksha: The 16-day period in the month of Bhadrapada is the most vital time for Tarpan.
  • Mauni Amavasya & Shani Amavasya: Special New Moon days that carry amplified spiritual merit.

The Sacred Procedure for Amavasya Tarpan

Our Pandits follow the Shastra-based protocols for a soulful Tarpan:

  1. Aavahan (Invocation): Invoking the ancestors into the Kush grass (Dharba) which acts as a sacred seat.
  2. Maha Sankalp: A formal declaration including your Name, Gotra, and the names of the ancestors you wish to satisfy.
  3. Pitri Tarpan: The main ritual where water mixed with Black Sesame Seeds is poured through the space between the thumb and index finger (the Pitri-Teerth area of the hand).
  4. The Core Mantra: "TrupYatAm, TrupYatAm, TrupYatAm" (Meaning: May you be satisfied).
  5. Deva & Rishi Tarpan: Briefly offering water to the Gods and Sages to maintain the cosmic balance.
  6. Vastra Daan (Symbolic): Offering a piece of thread or cloth to clothe the departed souls.
  7. Arghya & Aarti: Concluding with a final water offering to the Sun God and a prayer for the liberation of the ancestors.
  8. Daan (Charity): Encouraging the donation of food or grains to the needy, as this "completes" the merit of the Tarpan.

Preparation Checklist for the Devotee

To ensure a respectful ritual, please keep the following ready:

  • Ancestral Names: List the names of your father's side and mother's side ancestors (up to three generations if known).
  • Essential Items: A copper or brass vessel (Lota), a large plate to collect the water, Black Sesame Seeds, and Kush Grass (Dharba).
  • Offerings: Fresh white flowers (symbolizing peace) and a small amount of raw rice.
  • Personal Readiness: Wear a White Dhoti or light-colored traditional attire. Perform the ritual on an empty stomach after a bath.
